A Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) is required for all children with disabilities who are between the ages of 3 and 21 and who have not yet graduated from high school. Students with disabilities may attend school until the receipt of a high school diploma or until the end of the school year of their 21st birthday, whichever is earlier.
If your child is having trouble in school, you should contact your building principal to discuss your concerns. Unit #20 implements the RTI (Response to Intervention) process by which to assist students who begin to struggle and have been identified by either a staff member and/or the district’s universal screening tool. The RTI teams consist of school personnel that review concerns in the areas of academics and behavior in an attempt to change or improve student performance. A child who continues to struggle even with RTI in place may be in need of an evaluation by the Special Services Dpt.
You as a parent may initiate a referral for a Special Services evaluation at no cost to you by contacting your building principal or Mrs. Stoelting. Please refer to the Notice of Procedural Safeguards for Parents/Guardians of Students with Disabilities for further explanation of the rights you are entitled as a parent/guardian of a student or adult with a disability who is receiving or may be eligible to receive special education and/or a related services.
Also see these procedures in brief entitled: Special Education Services For Your Child… as drafted by SESE.
Unit #20 is a member of the South Eastern Special Education Cooperative (S.E.S.E.)
