General Assembly Update

The last few weeks of the regularly scheduled session of the General Assembly is upon us. Many daunting issues are being dealt with in the legislature, many of which revolve around the budget and its issues. It appears that nothing is sacred in this years state budget. Everything is on the table from substantial cuts to state government, changes to pensions and cuts to Medicaid (which is the state's program for providing health benefits to those who are in need).

Illinois Financial Woes Could Hit Transportation

Transportation funding has been slashed the last two years. They are threatening to do it again. Along with possible pro-rating of General State Aid. Many schools will begin to feel the pinch like never before. Unit #20 has always tried to balance what is best for kids with our fiduciary responsibility to our tax payers. We are proud that we have been able to maintain programs and provide our kids with a strong education, while typically managing our finances at an Illinois State Board of Education "Recognition" level.

New Website

I want to welcome everyone to the new and improved web presence for Unit #20. Our hope is that our new site is not only user friendly and attractive but that it will provide useful information for all three of our schools as well as the district. To visit our schools simply click on the "School" tab in the upper right of your screen. You can then visit Lawrenceville High School, Parkview Junior High and Parkside Elementary. All three school sites will have similar features such as a calendar or staff information pages.

As many of you may be aware October is "Bullying Awareness Prevention Month." This month spotlights a problem in our society that is age old but continues to show no sign of stopping. One of the issues at hand is a clear definition of bullying. So what is bullying?

Common Core Standards

Many of you may have heard of the term "Common Core Standards," many may not have heard of it. The Common Core Standards are being phased in, replacing the old outdated Illinois Learning Standards.

Illinois State Board of Education Talking Points Regarding Common Core Standards and New Testing

I have attached a link to several "talking points" provided by the Illinois State Board of Education regarding the new Common Core Standards and the changes that will be taking place with the state assessments. If you have any questions feel free to contact any of our building principals or myself. This is an exciting time to be a part of our district. We will soon be opening up a new Lawrenceville High School. We have a wonderful elementary school that serves as a terrific educational facility for our children and teachers.
